frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. contract talks are on. >> workers are hoping for irresolutions soon. elissa harrington is there. and many spent the night in front of the store didn't they. >> they have been out here 24 hours a day since they first went on strike one week ago. temperatures dipped into the low 40s overnight, so it is chilly. they have a fire going. they have their blankets and employees have been out here ever since last sunday when the strike first started. there's pressure on both sides to reach an agreement, especially before the busy holiday season. thousands of employees represented by the united food workers union have been walking the picket line since last week. the union refused to accept the contract proposal. here's what it included a wage freeze. holding veterans clerking at

21.30. they wanted to eliminate sunday and holiday premium pay. workers i talked wanted their contracts to stay as they were and were hoping for a speedy resolution. >> our main problem is they want to take our insurance that we have now, our medical and change it to raley's private insurance which means they're in charge of it and they can change it when they want to change it. all we want is to keep things we have. and they're trying to take things. >> reporter: workers say the union is making sure they still get paid but not nearly as much as what they would get on their regular shifts. both sides will not discuss exactly what they've been talking about in those negotiations but we know they're back at the table this morning. while that happens, picketers will stay out here and the stores will remain open. elissa harrington cbs 5. new this morning, two young men are lucky to have escaped a trash with minor injuries.

around midnight, their dodge durango crashed and fell 25 feet on the westbound lanes of interstate 80. it landed upside down partially collapsing the partial side and the 20-year-old driver and his passenger were very lucky and able to get out on their own. now a look at the new span that's about to become self- supporting. good morning kate. >> good morning frank, now, with this milestone movement, the bay bridge is on track and basically construction workers can breathe a sigh of relief that they can move onto the next few steps. take a look at the animation here, the process of shifting the ban of the bridge took about three months and 45,000- tons of steel and concrete. it was a labor process and they suspected through the deck to lift the 2000-foot the roadway

just a few feet and locked it all into place. that process is called load transfer. it's going to transform this bridge into a self-anchoring suspension span, the largest o of its kind. the spokes spokesperson says even though the process is done, the voters are nearby. >> there has been a notice not to go under the bridge, a number of operations have taken place. we are strengthening that message to boaters now. they should not go under the bridge at this time. >> reporter: they say it was a nerve wracking process because they were afraid it wouldn't transfer right and it's taken months to straighten out. this process is expected to rap up in the next couple of days. we're told the next step is to remove the temporary supports. you can see in the next few days they'll start to take

information on the investigation of general david petraeus. he resigned last week as head of the cia after admitting to an extra marital affair. tara merger joins us from washington. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. jill kelly a long time friend of the petraeus family apparently went to the fbi several months ago with her concerns and that led o to a revelation about the affair. and now congressments more information about the fbi's investigate. >> reporter: cbs has learned this girl, jill kelly triggered an investigation leading to the resignation of david petraeus. petraeus resigned friday after word got out he was having an affair with his biographer paula broadwell. his resignation caught many off guard. kelly went to the fbi after

allegedly receiving e-mails from broadwell warning her to back off and stay away from my guy. officials say broadwell believed kelly was a romantic rival. broadwell made this comment about petraeus during a publicity tour. >> i think he has been a terrific role model for young people. >> reporter: congressional leaders say they are going to start an inquiry of their own. >> this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. >> reporter: petraeus was scheduled to testify at hearings about the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. but michael morrell is taking his place which is causing concern. >> i don't see how you can find out what happened in benghazi if general petraeus doesn't testify. >> senator feinstein said petraeus could still be called

to testify at some point in the future. >> and the affair is said to have started two months after david petraeus took over as head of the cia. paula broadwell has been quiet since this started. >> is there any indication charges could be filed. >> reporter: at this point the fbi says no, probably not. they do not believe there was any national security breaches. they say the affair was a personal one and lawmakers are going to do their own inquiry. e details are unfolding bit by bit. >> is there any chance general petraeus will testify regarding the attack in benghazi. >> reporter: ben, yes, feinstein say they're reserving the right. there are a lot of lawmakers

representing peter king saying we have to analyze the time line of benghazi and others saying he has to testify, he played a key role. we could see him pop up in this process certainly at some point. at this point, not on the schedule. 6:09 now, veterans all around the country are being honored today. november 11th falling over the weekend. holidays being observed on this monday, city, county and state government offices are closed today. post offices will be closed as well. banks, schools are closed today as well. bay area transit systems are running on a regular schedule but without school service. president, vice-president, and their ws president obama marked veterans day at arlington national ceremony taking place in the wreath laying ceremony

over the past few months. it's called load transfer. workers shifted sections of the eastern span of the new bay bridge or about 45,000-tons of steel and concrete from its temporary supports to the cables and ropes using tension and hydraulic jacks. it was done in several steps to balance out the transfers. it's the largest of its kind in the world. a spokesperson says even though their wrapping up this section of the process, boaters nearby should be aware. >> there has been a notice not to go under the self-anchored suspension bridge because a number of operations are taking place we are strengthing that message to boaters right now. individual pleasure craft should not go under the bridge at this time. >> the 2000-foot roadway lifted a few feet. they say this was a labor intensive process and their concerns were that it wouldn't

transfer out easily and this is something they have seen done in the past with other bridges and if that had happened, it would have taken months to correct but they are on track for basically a complete opening of the bridge in september 2013. we're live on treasure island, cate cauguiran cbs 5. a strike against raley's and knob hill foods is in its second. week. there are renewed hopes for a resolution. elissa harrington is outside knob hill foods where people have been pickets overnight good morning. >> reporter: good morning. people have been picketing 24 hours a day since the strike started last week, and one picketer says she has never seen the parking lot empty as it has been this past week. this making a big impact on sales and putting pressure on the company to deal with the union. raley's a knob hill foods employees with the united food workers union have been on strike since last week.

they're at odds on wages and benefits. raley's has cut back to make changes in the contract to be competitive, and the company's proposal also calls for a wage freeze, holding courtesy clerks at 9.20 an hour and veteran clerks at 21.30. also the elimination of sunday and holiday premium pay. now, the union did not accept this proposal so that is what they are talking about right now. and even though e this -- this morning it is cold outside, some employees have been on the picket lines 13 hours a day, they are in good spirits hearing that the company and union are back at the negotiating table. >> we are hopeful this is the last couple of nights standing out here. it's harder standing out here than it is working in there for 8 hours. >> reporter: the thousands of workers have been taking part in this strike at roughly 100

or more food stores in california. in nevada they are hoping for a speedy resolution as we go into the busy holiday season. elissa harrington cbs 5. they have been rallying against the utility and others after superstorm sandy hit. about 73,000 homes and businesses remain without power in new york and new jersey. most of the lingering outages are on long island. crews say they hope e to restore power to most of the homes and businesses by tomorrow night. and there's major flooding today. this is shots from venice italy, the high tide marked yesterday was 5 feet above flood level. that's the 6th highest mark since record keeping started. it comes from heavy rains and wind whipped seas. movable barerers, have been in the works for years but will

transit. in the meantime, back to you guys. the nation's airline may need more pilots. carriers are bracing for what's expecting to be a wave of retirements in the industry. many senior pilots are close to reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65. the other problem facing the airlines is the high level of experienced requirements for those new hires, nearly four times as hard. captain sully sill lenberg says the shortage isn't that serious. the series of events that led to general david petraeus resigning from the cia. jill kelly contacted the fbi rabbit e-mails she claimed to have received from petraeus' biographer. broadwell considered kelly a romantic rival. and that led to the investigation that uncovered

the extramarital affair with broadwell prompting petraeus to resign. >> there's no effect on the affair of national security, i think we need to move on. >> members of congress are expected to ask tough questions about the scandal this week. former spokesperson says his wife is furious about the affair. president obama is holding meetings this week about the fiscal cliff. he will meet with leaders from the labor and business communities tomorrow and wednesday. then on friday he's scheduled to meet with a bipartisan group of congressional leaders. if there's not deal on budget deficits by the end of the year, automatic tax increases and spending cuts go into effect. san jose will become the largest city in the nation to have a minimum wage higher than the state's standard. matt bigler joins us to explain

this. >> reporter: good morning. the supporters of the measure d, the minimum wage measure on the ballot last tuesday in san jose are hearing from folks across california and across the country. they're asking how did you do this, how can you help us pass similar minimum wage increases in our cities. we talked to scot myers and he's a sociology professor and he explains what sort of interest they've been hearing. >> we've been contacted by groups groups in los angeles, berkeley. i talked to one scholar and he thought in 2014 there could be over a hundred city wide minimum wage ballot initiatives on the 2014 ballot initiative. >> reporter: measure d. was not a close election. it ended up passing with 59% of the vote and that is adding to the interest in similar minimum wage increases. business leaders have argued

that a raise and increase in the minimum wage will force businesses to lay off workers. according to the mercury news, two downtown restaurants have told their wait staff they will have their hours cut or could be laid off as a result of measure d. other restaurants have said we're not going to lay anybody off but may have to raise the price of menu items by a couple of cents. and that minimum wage increase to $10 an hour takes effect. i'm matt bigler cbs 5. the holiday is being observed today. county, state, federal offices are closed today. the post office closed as well. banks and schools are closed today. as well, and bari transit systems are running on a

welcome back, 6:45. democrat ares won big in last week's election. not just with the president but also here in california, and san francisco examiner columnist is here to explain how redistricting played a big role. democrats won big, that's for sure. and in california, the difference between a political party isn't necessarily northern and southern california versus the middle, it's west versus east. we have a map showing how the parties voted in the 2008 election. and you see the john mccain supporters concentrated inland and the obama supporters on the coast. in 2010 we had a new census and we had a citizens redistricting commission that put together a new group of districts and the 2012 congress enjoyed those new districts and was able to pick up more seats along the coast

because the districts follow more closely the partisan break down. so in 2012, democrats were able to pick up three seats and they actually pick up a 4th. that little yellow spot is a perfect example of this. that's district 7 where republican dan lungren has served since 2005. and it's a very close seat, brought to you by redistricting. >> the democrats are probably applauding now the election has come and gone. before it they were like don't do that. >> back in 2008, and again in 2010, that's when the ballot measures were up before voters so that we could create this independent commission instead of letting the legislature create their own lines. when that happened, the democrats were strongly against it. nancy pi rosie was against it

-- pilosi was against it. on the other side, republicans including charles munger gave millions of dollars. >> so much was that theory. >> they're regretting that today i'm sure. >> do they have anything to be happy about. >> there were a couple of districts that put democrats against other democrats, so we had pete stark lost his seat thanks in no small part to redistricting. and we had howard berman lost his seat because he had to go against another democrat. there were two losses of veteran lawmakers, but overall they picked up a net gain of three sales, maybe more. >> and -- seats, maybe more. >> i would be remiss if i

before we start to talk about rain once again. you have a couple clouds continuing to move across the bridge. they start to fall apart across the bay area. a rather flat ridge so we're going to keep these temperatures down. most of the rainfall will stay north of the bay area. mostly dry on this observed veterans day. about 68 degrees in fresno. sunshine there. could see showers up toward eureka and 40s and 50s in the high country. around the bay, mid-506. -- mid-60s. and low 60s in the napa valley. and lots of sunshine and a few clouds this afternoon. 60 in san francisco. 58 in daley city. next couple of days. might be some 70s making a return to the valley. and the latter part of the week, clouds on the increase, a chance of showers into friday, the better chance the latter part of this weekend.
